What is it about?

Akira Fudo is informed by his best friend Ryou Asuka that the demons will revive and reclaim the world from the humans. As the humans do not stand a chance against the supernatural power of the demons, Ryou suggests fusing with a demon. Akira becomes Devilman, with the power of a demon and the heart of a human.

What did I think?

Nopity, nope, nope, just… nope. This was not for me. Full disclosure: I’ve only watched one episode. Normally I watch an anime all the way even when I hate it, but I couldn’t bring myself to watch another episode. I know a lot of people like Devilman Crybaby, but honestly I can’t understand why. It’s so bad. The drawings are terrible, people don’t actually look like people. I hated how everything was so dark, didn’t like how rushed it felt.

So as I said I’ve only seen one episode and the whole time I was thinking: WTF is going on. First we’re in space, then there is a cat dying, then were at a school, then some creepy guy is raping for no reason, another guy turns up with a machine gun, the main character gets told about people being taking over by devils and doesn’t ask any questions (like come on, I know you’re friends, but when somebody tells you devils are real you should be at least a little bit sceptical) then were at a party, the party is actually an orgy, then there is blood and to top it all of THERE DEVILS COMING OUT OF PEOPLE’S GENITALS! (people who, by the way, have blue, green and yellow nipples because that makes sense)

Maybe if I’ve watched more episodes I would have found out the story was great or it has an awesome message behind it or something like that. But as I said in the beginning: nope, just nope. Not for me.

  1. DMCB is quite the experience. I watched the entire series. I walked away with the feeling that this was some really interesting nothing. The last scene is exactly like the opening scene. The world is caught up in a loop of failure and futility.

  3. it’s your first time watching a Masaaki Yuasa anime, so hating it is a default reaction! I think he’s a great director though, since he crafts great stories while also pointing out that anime is formless.
Can I interest you in a more friendlier anime of his, Ping Pong The Animation? 🙂

    1. Well I can believe the story turns out to be great, because otherwise people wouldn’t like it so much. But unfortunattely I just couldn’t get over the art style. And maybe I’ll check it out in the future, I have a bit too much prejudice right now to give it a fair chance 😉
