What is it about?

Tokyo is currently experiencing rain showers that seem to disrupt the usual pace of everyone living there to no end. Amidst this seemingly eternal downpour arrives the runaway high school student Hodaka Morishima, who struggles to financially support himself—ending up with a job at a small-time publisher. At the same time, the orphaned Hina Amano also strives to find work to sustain herself and her younger brother.

Both fates intertwine when Hodaka attempts to rescue Hina from shady men, deciding to run away together. Subsequently, Hodaka discovers that Hina has a strange yet astounding power: the ability to call out the sun whenever she prays for it. With Tokyo’s unusual weather in mind, Hodaka sees the potential of this ability. He suggests that Hina should become a “sunshine girl”—someone who will clear the sky for people when they need it the most.

Things begin looking up for them at first. However, it is common knowledge that power always comes with a hefty price….

What did I think?

Guys, Makoto Shinkai did it again!
Some background for those of you who don’t know Makoto Shinkai, he is the director of Kimi no na Wa (Your Name) which is the most successful anime movie ever.

Anyway back to the anime: I was so so so so so happy to see that some of the movie theaters in my country actually showed this movie. (Anime is really not that big over here). So I went, with ridiculously high expectations, popcorn and tissues ready to the movie theater.

When I say ridiculously high expectations, I am not kidding. In my opinion Your Name is one of the most beautiful things mankind has ever made and I heard that Tenki no ko was just as good.

And I have to say, I was NOT disappointed. This was so beautiful. For starters the artstyle is amazing. I thing I could just stare at some of the images for hours and not get bored.

Next to that the story was great. The concept is technically completely impossible, but not once you will think that. It is brought is such a way that everything makes sense. And it is not just an anime story, it goes deeper than that. It looks at what makes us human and how simple little things can bring so much happiness. It also shows you that live is not always rainbows and sunshine. If the sun would always be shining, how can you still fully appreciate it?

A story is only as good as their characters and also here I was not disappointed. Well thought out, believable characters with realistic motivations.
And the little cross-over scenes nearly made me lose my mind. (People who have seen both Your Name and Tenki no ko will get this 😉 )

Lastly I want to get into the music. Just like Your Name the music was provided by Radwimps, and just like Your Name the music was A-MA-ZING!
If you’re not sure if this movie is for you, just listen to “Grand Escape” from Radwimps, this one song somehow captures the essence of the whole movie.

I left the movie theater with such a feeling of peace and happiness, I could not stop talking about the movie for 3 days straight.

In summary: one of the best movies ever, watch it! No excuses, just watch it.

    1. I was also very excited to write review, but I don’t know why I could not write it. For days it’s been there in drafts. Maybe writing a review for a movie which was little inferior to Your name, and a masterpiece when you dives into it, is bit difficult. When shintai himself decided to go berserk, after Your name and to upset the critics by putting everything they criticized in Your name. It’s difficult task to do, you did a good job by writing your feelings.
